Hon. John Dornan

A well-known, respected and consulted specialist in the fields of Endocrinology, Internal Medicine and ICU for over 38 years, Dr. John Dornan has been intimately involved in acute healthcare delivery in New Brunswick.

Dr. Dornan was elected in the 2024 general election as the MLA for Saint John Portland-Simonds. He was appointed Minister of Health.

In the year 2000, strategic partnerships enabled Dr. Dornan to create and launch the Dalhousie University Internal Medicine Program, the first New Brunswick based specialist training program. The establishment of this Program was a pinnacle accomplishment in Dr. Dornan’s medical education career.

Dr. Dornan’s progressive leadership style enabled him to merge several smaller surgical disciplines into one Department of Surgery in the Saint John area.

During his term as Horizon Health Network’s CEO, Dr. Dornan assembled a competent enterprise leadership team, improving care in our province.

The launch of a regional program management structure was an important and significant advancement at Horizon, one of the larger regional health authorities in Canada.

Dr. Dornan is a strong proponent of Premier Susan Holt and the Holt government’s push for collaborative care clinics in New Brunswick.

Dr. Dornan is a passionate beekeeper and enjoys a modest annual harvest from his personal hives in his home backyard. The roof of the Departmental Building of the Legislative Assembly is now home to two of his beehives. The 100 000 bees of ‘The Speaker’s Honey’ project ensure pollination on the grounds of the Legislative Assembly and the plants, flowers and crops in the surrounding area, while the honey harvested will be used to help promote New Brunswick.

Dr. Dornan has lived in the riding of Portland-Simonds for 34 years; his wife Gail has lived in the area for most of her life. Their children, Robin and Andrew, enjoyed active lives through Millidgeville North School, St. Malachy’s High School and UNB Fredericton and Saint John.

An avid but slow runner, he has run 26 marathons, including Saint John’s inaugural Marathon by the Sea. Dr. Dornan and his dog Jack, along with many friends, walk and run the trails of Rockwood Park regularly.
