Hon. J. Arthur Moore

James Arthur Moore was born October 17, 1891, at Scotchtown, New Brunswick of English-Canadian ancestry. He was the son of David and Martha Olmstead Moore.

He was educated at the public schools and at the Currie Business College, Saint John.

He located at Gagetown, Queens County, New Brunswick, where he farmed and engaged in the lumber business.

On February 7, 1917, he married Miss Maude Loretta Mayes, daughter of Duncan G. Mayes of Queenstown, N.B. By this marriage there was a family of five sons.

He was first elected to the House of Assembly of New Brunswick as a Progressive Conservative member for Queens County at the general election of August 10, 1925. He was re-elected at the general election of June 19, 1930, and sat as a member until the dissolution of the Legislature in 1935.

Although he was defeated at the general election of June 27, 1935 he was again elected at the general election of November 20, 1939 and sat as a member until the dissolution of the Legislature in 1944. At the general election of August 28, 1944, he was defeated and remained out of active politics for eight years.

He was again elected to the House of Assembly at the general elections of September 22, 1952; June 18, 1956; June 27, 1960 and April 22, 1963, and sat as a member until the dissolution of the Legislature in 1967. At the general election of October 23, 1967, he was defeated and subsequently retired from active political life.

Mr. Moore represented the County of Queens in the House of Assembly of New Brunswick for nearly 30 years.

In February of 1955, he was elected Speaker of the House of Assembly of New Brunswick. He was re-elected Speaker on February 21, 1957.

Mr. Moore died on December 20, 1979.
