Kathy Bockus
Kathy Bockus was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in the September 2020 general election to represent the riding of Saint Croix. She was appointed to cabinet in June of 2023 to the post of Minister Responsible for Seniors.
She served on a number of legislative committees - Social Policy (chair), Climate Change and Environmental Stewardship, Private Bills, Estimates and Fiscal Policy, Law Amendments and she chaired the Select Committee on Accessibility in New Brunswick
The Accessibility Committee was responsible for providing the framework to create the province’s first Accessibility Act, passed in the Legislature in June of 2024.
As Seniors Minister Ms. Bockus said her greatest achievement was increasing the comfort and care allowance for seniors in nursing homes and special care homes. That increase began September 1st, 2024, and went from $108 to $150 for nursing home residents and from $135 to $190 for residents of special care homes. There had not been an increase since 2007.
She also advocated for a turn around of percentages of a couple’s income when one spouse was in a nursing home, changing it so that the larger amount, 60 percent, was provided to the senior still living at home. Ms. Bockus also supported the $200 annual increase in the Low-Income Seniors Benefit.
She has advocated in her riding under the Community Investment Fund, helping to award grants to a variety of community groups for projects to benefit constituents. And has advocated for funding from RDC for major projects such as Community Playgrounds in St. Stephen and McAdam and a new mobile command post for the Charlotte County Ground Search and Rescue.
Ms. Bockus was born in Saint John, raised in Hampton and moved back to Saint John with her husband Walter, a funeral director, to raise their two children and continue her decades long career as an award-winning journalist.
With her husband, she moved to the outskirts of St. Stephen in the late 1990s, continuing her journalism career there with the biweekly newspaper for almost 17 years, becoming familiar with the people, the places and the issues of the region. Through her writing she became an advocate for communities and those who live in them.
Ms. Bockus went to work as a constituency office assistant for the late Greg Thompson shortly after he was elected as an MLA in 2018. Throughout his term while he battled cancer, she filled in for him on many occasions while handling the day to day operations of his constituency office. Before Mr. Thompson passed away he told her to keep doing what she was doing; taking care of people.
That promise prompted her decision to run for election to continue to be able to help people solve their issues and support the economic sustainability of the region.
Ms. Bockus and her husband, who is now a beekeeping hobbyist, have seven grandchildren and live in Leverville, just outside St. Stephen, where the wild turkeys roam.
