Being an Intern
New Brunswick Legislative Interns enter the program with a knowledge of the essential norms and institutions of parliamentary government in Canada, and with an interest in the politics and government of the province. They are current students of one of New Brunswick’s universities and enter the Program while in their third or fourth year of university studies.
The Program is premised on the idea that a thorough understanding of contemporary government in New Brunswick is produced not just by sound academic preparation but by a practical immersion in the daily rhythm of legislative politics. This experiential opportunity deepens and broadens a student’s command of the nature, possibilities, and limits of contemporary parliamentary government, and prepares him or her for a variety of professional opportunities later in life. The Internship hones Interns’ communication and inter-personal skills, and helps them develop their capacity for public policy analysis.
Interns may work for MLAs from different party caucuses. They will be privy to sensitive and privileged information. Accordingly, Interns must observe the highest standards of confidentiality and discretion in their work and will be asked to sign an oath of secrecy at the outset of the Program. The integrity of the Program depends on Interns who remain scrupulously non-partisan and discreet.
